Freeze (Newest AZN drama)

프리즈 (Peu-ri-jeu) FREEZE (mini drama)

Last night was the first episode of FREEZE (out of five). This was broadcast in October 2006 on a Korean cable channel (not the big guns SBS, KBS, MBC) and it is a short mini drama with five episodes and it chronicles around a vampire. Yes, a vampire, not a topic I see in alot of Korean dramas actually.
So Baek Jung Won (Lee Seo Jin---Phoenix) stars as a vampire who lives in modern day Seoul as one of the co-owners of a very upscale Gangnam district bar. He lives his life lamenting over a lost love for many decades. E-hwa (Son Tae Young) is another vampire and she also owns the bar wtih Jung Won. She cares for him and wants him to be happy but she realizes she is unable to make him happy. One day,the lovely Ji-Woo (Park Han Byul) enters his life and she might be able to melt the icy wall around his heart. She is the daughter of a woman who loved Jung Won deeply but decides to leave guardianship of Ji Woo to Jung Won.
***I had high hopes for an awesome short drama. I was not that enthused. My expectations were let down to say. I felt the relationship not that believable for me to get it. Oh well.

The Strongest Romance/The Perfect Couple (K movie 2007)

Choi & Kang Romance(최강 로맨스) Director: Kim Jung Woo

In this movie where the title did not make sense Lee Dong Wook and Hyung Young star as a Police Detective and Newspaper Journalist respectively. One day they meet while Kang Jang Hyuk(Lee Dong Wook) character is chasing a suspect to only be stuck with a stick by Choi Soo Jin (Hyung Young) character after eating a Oden stick snack. Furthermore, a reality tv show is developed causing the pair to be together in many wacky situations.

I have to say it was not high on the smaltz and it was a bit refreshing, I could see elements of "My Sassy Girl" in it.

(YESASIA.com product film blurb:)

Romance can bloom out of the strangest events. Sometimes even very embarrassing ones.
Running after a pickpocket, Detective Kang Jae Hyuk (Lee Dong Wook, My Girl) finds out how problematic journalist Choi Soo Jin (Hyun Young, The Art of Seduction) can be when the fish skewer she's eating magically ends up impaled in his abdomen. Is it destiny, love at first sight? Not quite. But the two start to form a reluctant but formidable alliance: he's good looking, a great fighter, and a good detective. And she's determined to get her story done. Together, they make The Perfect Couple.

Understanding right from the start that what makes comedy work are gags and the actors who deliver them, Kim Jung Woo made his directorial debut in 2006 with the low-key high-returns comedy Oh! My God. Starring comic veterans Choi Sung Kook and Shin Yi, the film was a surprising success, with over 2.5 million admissions. Kim, who started his career as a screenplay writer alongside Taegukgi director Kang Je Gyu, comes back with The Perfect Couple, showing Lee Dong Wook in a new light and once again taking advantage of TV star Hyun Young's explosive comic talent.

Hana Yori Dango 2---Boys Over Flowers 2

After watching on YOUTUBE (before it was taken off) an excellent English dub of the real life version of the famous "Boys over Flowers" of Hana Yori Dango 花より男子was interesting. Making live action over the manga, there is always some finessing and skipping around the stories to have some cohesion and edits. It was weird to see the singer turned actor as Domiyo who left Makino behind. The drama ended with them parting and Makino declaring her love for Domiyo.

Episode number 1, starts with Makino stuck in NYC and getting robbed and almost hurt until someone saves her... but before the person is unveiled you see her life during the one year they are apart leading to this disastrous trip to NYC. As with any of the live action versions of the manga, they have slightly changed the storylines, added some story arcs etc and changed around the order. I think Inoue Mao does a great job as Makino Tsukushi and Matsumoto Jun as Doumyouji Tsukasa complements her very well.

It was interesting how they had to have a love square between some main characters and the side stories with Souijiro and Yuuki. I feel bad that Akira does not have much of a side story. With any love square mess, you have lots of missed opportunities, communication and obstacles that makes the "two" fated to be together to jump through many hoops.

I had fun watching this drama, a much needed escape with all that has been happening of late with me.

Enjoying Hwang Jini 황진이on AZN right now! Almost over....

(photos-asianfanatics/hancinema/kbs)

Hwang Jini 황진이 thus far has been a great costume drama for me without having to watch it for a long time such as Dae Jang Geum (aka Jewel of the Palace) of the just finished Jumong. At only 24 episodes it is shorter. But the costumes of the kisaeng (beautiful, artists skilled in poems, dance and music) are similar to geishas in Japanese culture. These women though with these freedoms did not have an easy life. They were forbidden to marry into the "yangbon" or aristocratic class.

This current drama with KBS actress of 2006 Daesaeng winner Ha Ji Won is a wonderful drama. She invested so much to be in this role learning how to walk on tightrope, wearing a heavy wig (gache) and learning traditional dance and playing a traditional 12 string instrument. Ji Won richly deserves her award. Last month, Song Hye Gyo is in the current big screen adaptation. According to some Korean news websites I have glanced at, the majority of Koreans enjoy Ha Ji Won in the KBS Television production.

I really enjoy this costume drama alot. The emotions of Ha Ji Won are subtle but graceful. She emotes well using her eyes and every glance and gesture is intense and brimming with meaning. She learns that love is not easy and after losing her first love, she realizes the reality of her place in life makes it difficult to be with her true hearts love. I am constantly impressed by the acting by Korean actors/actresses which is part of the reason I enjoy watching them.
I loved and enjoyed the little girl Shim Eun Kyung as the michievous Jini as a child. She was wonderful in the first two episodes! Kim Jae Won is famous for his smile and it is weird seeing him with a beard in this drama. But when he does smile it is blinding! My mom says it is full of warmth and sunshine! Kye Soo played by Yoo Tae Joon is well done and his eyes are very expressive. Though he is in love with Myeongwol, he resorts to any means or ways he can to have her as he knows she is motivated by power or money and she does not return his affections.

The side stories as well were not distracting either but enjoyable with the competition between the two troupes, or the unrequited love of Byuk Kye-Soo (model turned actor Yoo Tae Joon) to Baek-mu's all consuming obssession to perfect the Crane dance.

I think it is interesting the lack of promotional photos with Kim Jae Won as Kim Jung-Han the Minister of Music who falls for Myeongwol. For his first costume drama, he did a great job! There are more photos of Eun-Ho and Kye-Soo instead. Jang Geun Suk as Eun Ho is very good! He is similar to his character's age and does a great job. The gorgeous settings, the bridge leading to the meeting place for Eun Ho and Jini to the lake where they practice their dance steps. The costumes and the hanboks are gorgeous with color and simple designs. A wonderful festival for the eyes with beautiful scenery and lovely acting!

Great job AZN for showing this drama! I am just sad it is coming to an end. The subtitles are top rate too!

This story sheds new light on the life of Joseon-era dancer, musician and poet Hwangjini, who made her art blossom even when her love was put to test. The series also depicts the tragic life of a woman who faces hardships due to her social status. The drama drew the spotlight even before its premiere because Hwangjini is portrayed by top actress Ha Ji-won. Meanwhile, Wang Bit-na portrays another prominent dancer of the same era who is jealous of Hwangjini’s artistic talent. The role of nobleman Kim Eun-ho, Hwangjini’s first love who dies because their love turns out unrealistic due to differences in their social status, is played by Chang Keun-seok, while king’s relative Byuk Kye-soo, who becomes addicted to Hwangjini but fails to win her heart, is played by Yoo Tae-jun. Actor Lee Shi-hwan portrays Yi Saeng, an ambivalent character who is neither Hwangjini’s lover nor friend. Kim Young-ae plays the role of dancing girls’ trainer, while Kim Bo-yeon portrays her rival, Mae-hyang. The role of dancer Heon-keum, Hwangjini’s mother who gave birth to her as a result of her belief that love only comes once in a lifetime, is portrayed by Chun Mi-seon.

Hello, Miss (Kdrama 2007) -New AZN Drama

Title: 헬로 애기씨 / Hello! Miss (Hel-lo! Ae-gi-ssi)
Also known as: Hello! Baby
Previously known as: 프라이드 / Pride
Episodes: 16
Genre: Romance, Comedy

Lee Ji-hoon (이지훈)--Hwang Dong Kyu

Ha Seok-jin (하석진)--Hwang Chang Min

Synopsis
Lee Su-ha (played by Lee Da-hae) inherited the historical home, Hwa Ahn Dang, of the Je-an Lee clan after her father left for Seoul with another woman years ago and her mother died last year of stomach cancer. That is when her dual life began as the head of the nearly-ruined clan as she refused to give up on the Hwa Ahn Dang. But one day she meets Hwang Dong-kyu (played by Lee Ji-hoon), who asks her to sell the Hwa Ahn Dang to him by any means. Dong-kyu is the grandson of a servant who 50 years ago ran away from the Hwa Ahn Dang after stealing its cow and a bale of rice. But after much bickering, Su-ha and Dong-kyu end up falling in love with each other.

Casting:

Lee Dae-hae : Lee Su-ha The grandniece of the Je-an Lee clan and the owner of the clan’s historical home Hwa Ahn Dang, Su-ha lost her mother to stomach cancer last year, while her father left for Seoul with another woman many years ago. Refusing to lead a reclusive life in the Hwa Ahn Dang, Su-ha decides to explore her life. She falls in love with a guy named Hwang Dong-kyu, who urges her to sell the Hwa Ahn Dang to him.

Lee Ji-hoon : Hwang Dong-kyu A grandson of the TOP Group, Dong-kyu was raised by his stingy grandfather, the chairman of the group, but is too simple-hearted and well-mannered for a scion. His ignorance and simplicity, which run counter to his hard-hearted personality, add to his “unbalanced” charm. He invests his youth in learning how to inherit his grandfather’s business but falls in love with the pure-hearted girl Su-ha. However, despite his strong feelings for her, he stumbles a lot due to his poor courting skills. He becomes completely engrossed in trying to buy the Hwa Ahn Dang after his grandfather promises to pass his managerial rights to the grandson who gives him the Hwa Ahn Dang.

Ha Seok-jin : Hwang Chang-min Chang-min is Dong-kyu’s cousin and also a grandson of a family-owned conglomerate but he has no interest in inheriting his family’s business. He just takes what he has for granted and concentrates solely on modeling. His dazzling looks and outgoing personality captivate girls’ hearts at once. But he changes completely after he meets Su-ha and opens his eyes to genuine love. To win her heart, he embarks on learning business and emerges as Dong-kyu’s rival.

Yeon Mi-joo : Seo Hwa-ran Hwa-ran is a daughter of a madwoman who gave birth to her at the Hwa Ahn Dang. Smart enough, she has succeeded in being adopted by an educated and rich elderly couple after running away from home when she was in middle school. She returns to Korea after graduating from college in the U.S. and completely “upgrading” her body through plastic surgeries. As the one who has become somebody from nobody with painstaking effort, she challenges Su-ha, who shows up in her eventful life as an obstacle.

This drama started last night (7/5/07) on AZN. This was shown on KBS in Korea and was just shown this year from March til May 2007. Very new drama and I am looking forward to it if the first episode is any indication.

They were not kidding when they put the push and emphasis on Asian programming within the last two years. It has a great start last night as the first episode. I love the feistiness of the main character not weak and taking things lying down! I love her back bone! Plus I need a comedy/romance after having so many serious dramas. A nice addition and keep up the good work AZN!
